About
My name is Ellen, I was born in Ōtautahi, Christchurch, and have lived in a few different places around New Zealand over the years, most recently in Tūranganui-a-Kiwa, Gisborne, where I owned and operated a cafe with friends for four and a half years. We’ve since sold the cafe and I’m now based between New Zealand and Australia, travelling for work.
I’m drawn to light, nature, and human connection. I’m always chasing that warm, golden glow, which you might notice throughout my work. I love creating imagery that is honest and thoughtful, but also holds that ethereal dream like feeling. I’ve always been drawn to photography. I remember my late dad gifting me my own little digi cam for my 11th birthday, it was one of my favourite gifts, and I can still remember opening it. He was a hobbyist photographer himself, and I think a lot of my love for photography came from being around his creativity. To this day I still have a few of his lenses, which I started out with, shooting surf photography and landscapes. This was the beginning of my photography journey.
I studied in Ōtepoti, Dunedin at the University of Otago, I have a Bachelor of Commerce, a Major in Marketing and a minor in Psychology, which has shaped the way I approach people and storytelling. Over the years I’ve worked across a mix of projects, including documentaries and short films, commercial work, surf comps, music festivals and branding. I’ve photographed over 100 weddings across New Zealand and Australia. I’ve spent years travelling and photographing different places and people. Some of the places I’ve spent time in include Indonesia, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Spain, Portugal, France, Uruguay, Argentina, and Brazil. A lot of that work lives over on my Instagram @ellenmarytaylor, with my wedding work on @ellenmaryphoto.
I love shooting Super 8 film, which I started experimenting with in 2020 and now offer alongside my photography. I shoot both photo and video, across analogue and digital formats, and I’m always open to trying something new.
